What to Do If You Lose a Crown or Filling

What to Do If You Lose a Crown or Filling
Losing a crown or filling can feel sudden and stressful, especially if it happens while eating, at night, or right before a weekend. Sometimes there is no pain right away. Other times, the tooth becomes extremely sensitive almost immediately. Either way, it is important not to ignore it.
A lost restoration leaves the tooth more vulnerable, and the longer it stays exposed, the greater the chance of further damage.
Why a Lost Crown or Filling Matters
A crown or filling is there to protect and restore tooth structure. Once it comes off or falls out, the area underneath may be exposed to:
- cold air
- temperature changes
- chewing pressure
- bacteria
- additional breakage
Depending on how much healthy tooth remains, the exposed area may feel mildly sensitive or extremely painful. It may also become easier to fracture if you continue chewing on that side.
What to Do If a Crown Comes Off
If a crown comes off, try to keep it if possible and bring it with you to the appointment. In some cases, the crown may be able to be re-cemented if it is still intact and the tooth underneath is healthy enough.
However, that is not always possible. If the crown is damaged, or if the tooth underneath has changed, a new dental crown may be needed.
What to Do If a Filling Falls Out
If a filling falls out, the next step depends on the size of the lost restoration and the condition of the tooth. Some teeth can be repaired with a new dental filling. Others may need a crown if too much structure has been lost or weakened.
That is why evaluation matters. What looks like a “small lost filling” can sometimes reveal a much bigger issue underneath.
What to Do Until You Can Be Seen
While waiting for your appointment:
- avoid chewing on that side
- keep the area as clean as possible
- avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods if the tooth is sensitive
- do not try to glue the crown back on with household adhesives
If the area is painful, be especially careful not to bite down directly on it.
Is This a Dental Emergency?
This situation may not always feel like a dramatic emergency, but it should still be treated promptly. A lost filling or broken dental crown can quickly turn into a more serious problem if the tooth is left exposed too long.
At Silver State Smiles, we evaluate what remains of the tooth and determine whether the restoration can be replaced directly or whether a more protective solution is needed.
